Experiment. - Paint It Black
Living the American dream one heartbreaking piece at a time
Known fact: Alcohol is a depressant. It inhibits brain function.
Known fact: I'm not sleeping well, my brain appears to be in part at fault.
Theory: Given the two above known facts, I hypothesize that If I drown my brain with liquor tonight, I will sleep better.

The results? I'll tell you tomorrow. Now, if you will excuse me, I must go join citrus vodka to iced tea.

Mmmm... vodka...

In defense of your theory, I usually sleep like a rock if I've been drinking. Then I wake up suddenly about an hour before my alarm goes off. Go figure.

Sleep stuff

Rumor (in the form of some books by sleep researchers) suggests that alcohol sleep isn't very high-quality sleep. Alcohol tends to do bad things to REM sleep, which is pretty important for feeling rested the next day.

I recommend tincture of valerian, as an occasional sleepydrug: a half-dropperful, held under your tongue as long as you can stand it, then swallowed. It's stronger than alcohol for me (and I've got a very low tolerance for alcohol).

Nyquil or other nighttime cold drugs, or even sleeping pills, might work as well.

None of these are good to rely on for any great length of time, but once in a while they're OK.

I think..

Re: Sleep stuff

But, but, but but but... but isn't a tincture basically made by extracting the essence of an herb in alcohol?

I've packed my herbalist-type books, of course.

Re: Sleep stuff

True, true. Becca Harbor, an herbalist I know, uses vodka.
But there's not that much alcohol in a half-dropper of tincture: it's effectively a half-dropper of very nasty-flavored vodka. Enough so you should pay attention if you're extremely sensitive to alcohol, but that's not what's knocking you out with it.
