Family Invasion
About five minutes ago I got a phone call from my folks, which is not in itself an entirely uncommon event. What is uncommon, however, is their decision to leave town tomorrow and indulge in a mini-vacation that will span two or three days. To be honest I was a bit surprised by this. While things around the farm have geared down some thanks to the end of the summer season, plenty of projects are on the radar that normally would keep their attention focused on the homestead. Even without those projects there are a myriad of things that would keep the two of them from both going on a vacation. As an example, my father is usually busy preparing for the November deer season by taking trips up to the hunting grounds and checking out the game trails. When he's gone, my mom stays home to care for the dogs and the horses.

The news of the vacation wasn't the only surprise they had in store, though. The other surprising part is their destination! My mother and father are going to drive down here and spend the weekend with me. Some people might complain when faced with decidedly short notice like this but I'm actually quite pleased. My efforts to make a trip back to Minnesota this summer had been thwarted, and so it has been almost a year since I last saw any member of my family. I'd really started to miss them. I'm quite excited to have them coming to visit, though I'm a bit disappointed that they'll only be able to stay until Monday. We have a lot of catching up to do and quite a lot has changed around this area since they were in town last (such as the new Ikea in my area, the huge new TV in my house, the giant NTB that's being built behind me, etc). I bet they won't even recognize Ra because he's fourteen pounds, three ounces at this point. I think this is the heaviest he's ever been.

In light of the unexpected company that will be staying with me for the next few days I've had to change the plans for the rest of my week (oh no, the whole one day that's left!) and the weekend. I'll take tomorrow off from work and tend to some chores around the house before my folks arrive (It's as good an excuse as any to clean and sort some of the A/V cables that were liberated after the TV and DirecTiVo was installed). I won't make it to the MFF staff meeting on Sunday and I don't think I'll be at league bowling in the evening, either.

I'm going to chill out for a bit more on my couch, then go to bed and see if I can't catch a couple hours of decent sleep for once. With my father down here I'll have plenty of excitement this weekend to tire me out, I suspect.

He's drinking whisky all day

Speaking of chubbyRa, how's he been holding up lately? I think he and my cat are running the same drug ring, for as many meds as they both take.

Mmm, whisky...
